What Would You Do Without Fear?
" If I tell her about her performance, she might quit."
If you do she might become better.
"If we attempt that strategy, we might fail."
If we do, we might become the leader everyone emulates.
"He'll never accept that information...and then what?"
If he does, he might respect your willingness to confront a difficult choice.
"I'm not as good as they think I am."
Very few of us are as good, or as bad as we think we are. Be as good as you are.
"We have such a large market share, we can't risk it."
If we do, we might have more. Better we cannibalize ourselves before someone else does.
"Can we overcome this setback?"
Probably. If you do not try, you will never know.
"I can't afford to be gone so long."
So are you afraid that they can't get along without you or that they can? Better plan: prepare your team for a developmental experience. That's indispensable.
"I'm not ready for that promotion."
If you are 100% ready, you are late. 80% is a better target.
"It's so hard to ask for forgiveness."
That's right, it is. Because first we must confront our fear of being vulnerable and possibly getting a "no".
"It's so hard to forgive."
That's right, it is. Because first we must confront our need to be right and then, let go of our fear of being part of the problem. Unfortunately, if we don't, we are not part of the solution.
Everyone becomes afraid at some time. Some of us let it energize us to be greater and some of us allow it to keep us from our best.
What are you afraid of? And what would you do if you were not afraid?
That is part of Innovation.
